Vaping Etiquette

Are you new to public puffin or just looking for some tips to be a more courteous vaper? Explore proper puffing etiquette to keep peace with those around you.

It's no secret that new people have been getting hooked on vapes in the last couple of years. Between 2019 and 2021, e-cigarette use jumped from 8.8% to 10.2% among U.S. adults aged 18 to 21.

When it comes to smoking, the rule has always been simple: don't smoke in enclosed spaces or even near others. However, with there being no laws for public vaping , it is often down to the discretion of the vapers themselves to decide whether it's ok or not.

Not to worry though! We are here to set the record straight. Here are the Do's and Don'ts of vaping etiquette, along with plenty of useful information.

Where Is Vaping Legal?

Where Is Vaping Legal?

In the United States, the sale and delivery of nicotine or vapour products is prohibited for persons under 21. Each state in the U.S. is subject to its own regulations, but in a majority of states, e-cigarette use is prohibited where smoking is prohibited. Some of these places include public spaces, restaurants, mass transit, hospitals, schools, and certain outdoor areas. The only states that do not regulate indoor vaping at all, be it by state territory or on a local level, are in the states of Nebraska, Nevada, Rhode Island, and Tennessee.

Though these regulations are clear, some smokers still decide to vape in prohibited locations which is a a headache for those who don't smoke.

Vaping Etiquette Dos and Don’ts

Do - Ask!

The first thing you should think before reaching for your vape in a new setting is whether it’s okay to use it there. The easiest way to know is to ask. It’s key to remember this everywhere, even in homes and cars that aren't yours. It is important to make sure that everyone is comfortable with you puffing around them before starting.

Do - Check For Smoke Signs

Nowadays, most businesses are savvy and realise vaping is popular. Because of this, many have begun placing vaping guidelines. You should keep an eye out for no-smoking signs. Nothing is more uncomfortable than someone having to ask you to stop vaping in a public place.

Do - If All Else Fails, Treat It Like Smoking

If neither of the above is suitable, then you should treat vaping as you would smoking, i.e., don't vape indoors or around others. Although vaping is more discreet than a cigarette, people might ask you not to smoke in their personal space. Think of others first always to avoid awkward altercations.

Don't - Vape In Queues

Even though you may be outside and in a public space, vaping in close proximity to others is always a bad idea. Places like queues are prime examples. Although you are outside, vape smells and clouds can still be unpleasant for those around you. These people have no choice but to inhale the vapour you produce. Maybe wait until you are able to locate the smoking area instead of puffing in the queue.

Don't - Blow Vapour In People’s Face

This one should really be common sense, but people still do it! Blowing vape smoke directly into someone's face is very rude. If your friends are cool with vaping, blow your vapour down or to the side, out of people's way. Unlike cigarettes, vape devices offer control over where your vapour travels, so use this advantage!

Don't - Try To Sneakily Vape

In places where you cannot vape, don't try to cheat the system by sneaking a puff. No matter how discrete you are, it's not difficult to detect the smell or see vapour wisps. Many people will be too polite to ask you to stop, but you will no doubt annoy them. Vaping in certain locations is for health and safety concerns, don’t risk getting kicked out or even fined for something as foolish as vaping.

Vaping In A Relationship

Vaping etiquette also covers how people view vaping romantically. Researchers examined if romantic partners prefer smoking or vaping and found that potential partners prefer vaping over smoking. Even though your partner may prefer this, it is still important to be mindful of them while puffing near them.

When vaping near your partner, we’d recommend sticking to our vaping etiquette guidelines. This includes both public and private appearances in your partner's company. If you blew vape clouds at your date all night, we don't think it would work well. In addition, you would be getting into disagreements with members of the public as well!
